What is the best Home Automation Technology?

Last Updated Nov 2008

So it has been a while since we've done anything with our Domotics (Home Automation) blog, and it's getting to be winter time, time for projects inside the house.

Last year we started down the path of Smarthome products, but we didn't proceed all that far into the system. We still have the hardware, and will most likely use that hardware/technology going forward, but first the question is.

What is the best Home Automation Technology? There are multiple technologies out there. X-10, Smarthome, Z-Wave, Zigbee, just to name a few.

So what do you think is the best technology, and what?

I had a lot of problems with the X10 getting it to work reliably and in the end changed to ZWave. The later ZWave products are a lot better than the ones I started off with 3 years ago. I started off (and still use) with Homeseer as the control software mainly because it worked with a range of technologies. I have stuck with it out of Convienence.

I would say Insteon, I didnt believe it at first but its true the more items you add the better it gets. The first start kit I got missed a couple of times and I got frustrated fast. Its also knowing your house. As of today all my switches are changed over, and I ended up installing a 3rd access point when I use a lot of outdoor decorations. Its awesome and never fails. Hang in there!

in my country Indonesia, where the government electrical company failed to give us a stable electrical voltage, X10 and PLC solution often avoided. AMX, Crestron, Philip Pronto and Legrand's non-PLC solution are usually accepted by common clien and consultant.
